CHP Deputy Leader Bağcıoğlu Criticizes S-400 Procurement, Calls for Priority on Rapid-Impact Defense Projects
Yüksel Bağcıoğlu, Deputy Leader of Turkey’s main opposition CHP, shared critical remarks regarding the country’s current defense procurement strategy, focusing on the controversial S-400 missile defense systems purchased from Russia.
He described the procurement of the S-400 system as a significant error that demands reconsideration of defense priorities. Bağcıoğlu underlined the necessity for the Turkish Armed Forces and defense industry to concentrate on domestically-developed projects that provide rapid and tangible results on operational grounds.
Emphasizing the strengthening of Turkey’s indigenous defense industrial base, Bağcıoğlu stressed that prioritizing local and national technologies is crucial for both economic independence and strategic security.
He further noted that Turkey should seek a position in regional and global security frameworks that reflects its self-reliant defense capabilities, minimizing reliance on foreign military hardware.
Regarding the S-400, Bağcıoğlu warned about the potential negative implications such systems may pose within international political and defense dynamics. He recommended that modern, integrated, and fast-impact defense solutions developed by local defense enterprises should take precedence moving forward.
